Interactive Marketing News: Facebook Now Serves 1/3 of All Online Ads

I’ve written several blogs now about Facebook, describing the nature of its growth and its importance in the online marketing industry. I’ve discussed how to market and brief reasons why you should market on Facebook.

I think this most recent statistical analysis of Facebook’s market share from comScore strongly reinforces what I’ve been getting at: Facebook now accounts for one-third of all online ads served.

In the first quarter of 2011, it is estimated that 1.1 trillion ads were served and Facebook served 346 billion or 31% of those ads. That’s a 6% growth from the third quarter of last year! Not only that, but Facebook serves almost 79.5% of all display ads!*

Facebook is now one of the top performing ad platforms out there, and even better they’re continuously evolving their platform for advertising.

They’ve been releasing more ad styles geared to an engaging social experience. This includes ads to poll your fans and network, sharing important news items and events, and even offering up coupons that can only be seen if you’re a current fan.

By banning the “iPad giveaway” fan garnering tactic, Facebook is positioning itself to deliver more high quality engagement from people in its network. We’ve often seen high drop offs in fan base from these giveaways and Facebook has too.

They also recently implemented the iFrames which allow businesses to create coupon pages only accessible to their fans.

We’re continually watching and experimenting as Facebook releases more and more opportunities for us to engage with highly active users.
